What is Depression?

Depression is classified by a combination of signs and symptoms that have been present for 2 weeks or more, and represent a change in previous behaviour and functioning. It is an affective disorder that affects approx 6.2% of the Australian population.

There are different classifications of depression - Mild, Moderate, Severe and Major, as well as Adjustment Disorder.

An Adjustment Disorder with depressed and/or anxious mood, occurs after a significantly stressful event in someones life. However, the symptoms and criteria are not met for a diagnosis of depression or anxiety. It is related to their current life situation. 

Crit​eria for Depression

For someone to be diagnosed as depressed, they need to present with 5 of the following sings/symptoms, with at least one of the top 2.

  1. depressed mood
  2. loss of interest or pleasure
  3. significant appetite or weight loss or gain
  4. insomnia or hypersomnia, most days
  5. psycho-motor agitation or retardation
  6. fatigue or loss of energy, most of the day
  7. feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt, most days
  8. impaired thinking or concentration, indeciciveness
  9. suicidal thoughts/thoughts of death
