What is Depression?
Depression is classified by a combination of signs and symptoms that have been present for 2 weeks or more, and represent a change in previous behaviour and functioning. It is an affective disorder that affects approx 6.2% of the Australian population.
There are different classifications of depression - Mild, Moderate, Severe and Major, as well as Adjustment Disorder.
An Adjustment Disorder with depressed and/or anxious mood, occurs after a significantly stressful event in someones life. However, the symptoms and criteria are not met for a diagnosis of depression or anxiety. It is related to their current life situation.
Criteria for Depression
For someone to be diagnosed as depressed, they need to present with 5 of the following sings/symptoms, with at least one of the top 2.
- depressed mood
- loss of interest or pleasure
- significant appetite or weight loss or gain
- insomnia or hypersomnia, most days
- psycho-motor agitation or retardation
- fatigue or loss of energy, most of the day
- feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt, most days
- impaired thinking or concentration, indeciciveness
- suicidal thoughts/thoughts of death
Possible Causes of Depression
Stress Response System Imbalance
Heavy metal toxicity
Blood sugar control
Pre-existing medical conditions (such as diabetes, cancer, hepatitis, influenza, renal disease, rheumatoid arthritis)
